Hello Deborah, we are so glad to be talking to you…
Can you kick things off by sharing a bit about yourself and the journey that led you to the world of writing.

Hi, my name is Deborah. I use the pen name D E Fox. I live in a city in the county of Yorkshire in England. The thought of writing a book had never crossed my mind until in February 2019 when my dog Jake sadly passed away suddenly, and I suffered a mental breakdown. I couldn't cope with the emptiness his loss caused, I needed to do something with the extra time I found I had. I decided that I would write a book and give it to my mum as a christmas present, and after going to the cinema to watch a horror film which wasn't scary, I decided I could do better and so I wrote my own horror story. Second Hand Rose was born and Jake is one of the main characters in the book. Writing about his funny quirks helped me focus on his life rather than his death.
How wonderfully heartwarming! Speaking of your works, your book plots are incredibly imaginative; what’s your secret sauce for coming up with such creative ideas? Do you draw inspiration from real-life experiences?
I have a wild and vivid imagination, my dreams are incredibly weird and make our friends laugh and sometimes worry. I think this is why my writing is maybe a little different and out there. I dislike reading books or watching films that have been done time and time again, I love original ideas and twists and turns I didn't see coming, when I read I want to be transported and forget the ironing needs of doing or making tomorrow's lunch. I love to escape. (even if it's only a few hours)
Yes, we absolutely love your originality!...And, being a writer, you understand that the journey has its peaks and valleys; what do you consider the best and worst aspects of the book-writing process?
The best aspect for me was receiving the first finished copies of my books, I cried when I received Second Hand Rose.

It definitely hit home. I was an author and I shouted THIS IS MY BOOK!! MY BOOK I could not believe it. Unfortunately I won't say the worst but the low aspects are marketing/promoting. I wish there was a manual to guide you on your way. I wasn't even on social media before I became an author and it's a minefield. But I have to say the writing community is amazing and so supportive. Little by little I have made some amazing friends and we all help each other, we recommend podcasts/interviews to each other. I literally couldn't do this without them.
Without a doubt, having a community is extremely valuable. Would you be willing to share with our community what your most effective writing environment is? What does your perfect setup look like when you're creating your stories?
I mentioned before that I'm a little weird, well my writing environment probably says it all. I write in my living room on my Chromebook with Murder, she Wrote playing in the background. Jessica Fletcher is my hero (Angela Lansbury). I was lucky enough to see her on stage in Blithe Spirit in London's West End. I find her voice so soothing. My partner is sick of seeing the reruns but he understands I couldn't write without her. She's here now while I write this interview.
This is awesome! We’re big fans as well! So, in terms of genre, is there one you find yourself most drawn to when it comes to writing?
I'd say horror/thriller as that was my first book, I never dreamed I'd write a children's book. But I had an idea for a second book and because I wanted Jake to be the main character again and unfortunately our friend's dog Sammy had just passed away. It seemed fitting that the book had both of them in and they could only be spies and save the planet. Afterall four legs and better than two.
Agreed! We’re thrilled you followed your heart, the outcome is incredible and we believe it will become a favourite for many young readers. On the topic of favourites, who is your favourite author in the realm of children's literature, and what about their work resonates with you?
A A Milne my mum bought me Winnie The Pooh when I was born in 1973 which I still have to this day. The book is genius and is written not only for children but for adults too. Whenever I need a book hug it comes out of the book shelf and I marvel at it, Pooh is definitely not a silly old bear, he's a national treasure. I wish one day my books will touch someone as much as that book has touched me.

We are sure they will!...Reflecting on your journey as an author, what has been the highlight or most rewarding moment so far?
When I receive messages from readers saying how much they liked/loved my books and that they liked Jake the most. It still makes me cry to think that little dog is still touching so many people. He was so special and I'm glad he's still making people laugh and cry. even if it's in book form.
He is certainly still spreading so much happiness! As is your work! Now…looking ahead, what exciting plans or aspirations do you have for your future in writing?
Well my writing journey has taken a different turn recently. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in March, so I want to write a book to help other cancer patients from a cancer patient perspective. from my experiences which have been so positive I'm hoping I can help others be positive and fight. I also have a prequel and a sequel for Second Hand Rose brewing, a sequel for Where is all the Grass Going? and a crime/thriller with a twist. My head is full of stories and I just need time to get them all out.
Oh, so sorry to hear this! It's good to know your experiences so far have been positive and really admirable that you’re using your circumstances to support others…As we get to the end of our chat, what advice would you give to aspiring writers who dream of following in your footsteps?
Write, write and write. I never dreamed anyone would love my books as much as my mum. But I have messages of support every day. The hard work will pay off and it's worth it. Whatever the reason to start just do it, I love every minute and I wouldn't change a thing. I have Jake to thank for this amazing journey I've found myself on.
Definitely! And, lastly, where can our readers go to buy your books?
